There are many reasons why drivers should buy products such as car shampoo, car waxes and clay bars and clean their cars themselves rather than take them to a car wash and one motorist is likely to do just that after a recent experience at an automatic wash.
Robert Clarke took his Mercedes to a Sainsbury's car wash but soon regretted the decision after the machine caused significant damage to his motor.
The drying arm on the machine malfunctioned halfway through the wash and instead of stopping near his car it carried on into the bumper, bending the bonnet and lifting the Merc off the ground.
"I'm really shaken up. It was like something out of Terminator. It was like a giant hairdryer that was on a killing spree, I was absolutely petrified," Mr Clarke said afterwards.
His car was taken away by the insurance company and he expects it to be written off, he added.
Those whose partners regularly use automatic car washes could buy them Autoglym detailing products for Christmas and help them clean their cars themselves.
The Press and Journal recently suggested the Autoglym Surface Detailing Clay Kit as a good gift idea.
