Clay bars ‘the best for removing below-surface contaminants’

Brake and rail dust as well as industrial fallout can all wreak havoc on a car's paint job but there are steps drivers can take to make sure their motor does not suffer.

Writing for Professional Carwashing and Detailing, Andras Nagy said that when motorists run their fingertips over their paint and notice it is gritty and lumpy then they need to act quickly and the most effective way to remove these imperfections is through the use of clay bars.

"The best way to get rid of these embedded particles is the use of a clay bar … claying can be done as frequently as necessary. If it creates a glassy and glossy smooth surface, no polishing is necessary," he stated.

If the bodywork is still not silky smooth then Mr Nagy recommended investing in car polishes, compounds and finishing papers to get the job done.

Brian Eisenhauer, writing on his personal blog, said that using clay bars properly is a time-consuming process but it is worth the effort as the finish is usually exemplary.
