Volcanic ash cloud ‘poses threat to car paint jobs’

Drivers should have their car shampoo and car waxes at the ready, as the volcanic ash cloud that has moved through British air space poses a threat to paint jobs.

That is according to Autoglym, which stated that the particles are larger than those seen in the cloud created by Eyjafjallajokull eruption which saw a huge wave of dust and ash move across Europe last year.

Drivers Scotland and Northern Ireland are at most risk, however, motorists in England and Wales could be affected by the dust and other contaminants if the weather takes a turn for the worse and pushes the cloud south.

Autoglym chief executive officer Paul Caller, said car owners should remember the damage caused by last year's cloud and take appropriate action.

"Motorists saw heavy swirls on paintwork after they failed to take sufficient precautions when washing ash off their cars," he added.

Recent research from Autoglym suggested drivers have nothing to worry about with regards to bird droppings, as the acidity does not damage paint jobs.
