Car waxes may improve the shine of a vehicle but they do more to the paint than make it shiny.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the US is urging drivers in the country to invest in car waxes before harsh winter conditions set in, as they will provide a layer of protection against the elements.
"While you may think of waxing as more of a cosmetic treatment, it can also protect your car's paint from road salt and scratching caused by extra sand [and] other debris on the road," the body said.
The NHTSA also encouraged drivers to clean their vehicles regularly during the colder months to reduce the effect of rusting agents.
One area in particular which is vulnerable is the wheels, with alloy wheel cleaners one way in which motorists can protect their rims.
Mark Shore of WMV Sales told the Montreal Gazette recently that Autoglym car waxes offer superior protection than many of the alternatives.
