The top spot in the first of 2012 Auto Express detailing product tests has been scooped by The Kent Microfibre 2in1 Microfibre Noodle Wash Mitt Q2429. In a test of 12 different brands and styles of wash mitt the Kent Wash Mitt came out top overall for its absorbency, grime removing abilities and fit.
The test which involved dividing the bodywork of a filthy car into sections. Then using the mitts both dry and then wet to see how they coped with removing caked-on dirt, the tightness of the fit, and overall control around more difficult areas of the car such as grills and wheels. A new breakthrough in surface technology could soon make life a whole lot easier for millions of motorists. The latest development in “superhydrophobic” coating materials could see a new breed of car care products that when applied to your paintwork makes it so slick that it effectively becomes “self cleaning”.
This new coating material is so repellent that any liquid placed on this coating simply rolls off without touching the underlying surface. The developers also claim on their website that when grime or dirt accumulates on the surface, a simple light spray of water grabs the dust and because the water is repelled by the superhydrophobic surface, it then also simply rolls away. Following recent research by the AA which said a large proportion of drivers are regularly distracted by their passengers; a subsequent survey of road users by insurance provider Aviva says that more than half of women get wound up when their partner is in the car with them.
Some 53 per cent of lady car lovers said that they feel stressed or nervous when driving their partner anywhere and this has an adverse effect on their driving skills.
In contrast, one in ten male drivers said that having the partner with them improves their driving as it makes them a much more cautious motorist. Read the rest of this entry »
While cleaning your precious car is an enjoyable and inexpensive task, keeping your car on the road in other ways may be giving you a serious headache.
A report released by the RAC shows that the cost of motoring has shot up by an incredible 14 per cent in the past 12 months.
This means that on average drivers are now shelling out £128.64 each week just keep their car running. This works out to be £55.74 per miles and means that on the average vehicle costs £1,556 more than it did back in 2007.
And while cars are costing more to run, they are also losing value faster. Figures show that depreciation rose by 16.67 per cent in the last year.
The cost of insurance brought about the biggest year-on-year change. It rose by a staggering 14.38 per cent and is now a whopping 35 per cent higher on average than it was in 2009.
Fuel rises were the next largest factor at 12.4 per cent more than a year ago.
In total, the running costs came to £6,689 compared to £5,870 in 2010.
RAC motoring strategist Adrian Tink said: “This year’s cost index highlights the tough conditions being faced by Britain’s motorists.
"With fuel prices the biggest single running cost, UK drivers want action from the government.
“Last week’s Commons debate showed the real depth of feeling across the country on this issue. At the very least, we are calling for the scrapping of next year’s planned fuel duty increases.”
The figures come at a time when the Association of British Insurers is calling for an outright drinking ban for young drivers as well as a removal of their right drive on the nation's roads between 11pm and 4am.
The government, however, had knocked back the proposal because it would impede some people who need to get to work or college.
