Car Tyre Dressing Review: Pinnacle Black Onyx Tyre Gel vs Poorboys Bold N Bright Tyre Gel
Two Popular Tyre Gels Go Head to Head

This is a guest blog post kindly written by Mark Beardmore, one of our regular contributors and longstanding detailing enthusiast. Mark is an experienced detailer and has tried and tested many new products as they come to the market. For this car tyre dressing review, Mark has thoroughly tested and reviewed two car tyre dressings from well known manufacturers; Poorboys Bold n Bright Tyre Gel and Pinnacle Black Onyx Tyre Gel.

The Car Tyre Dressing Review

Before starting the test, the wheels and tyres were deep cleaned using Bilberry Wheel Cleaner and wash solution of Meguiars Hyperwash and some Chemical Guys Citrus Degreaser to give the tyres the full clean and enable me to get the best possible results from the two dressings on test.

Next the wheels and tyres were completely dried using a microfiber cloth and some Meguiars Last Touch Detailer as a drying aid.

Once fully dry i taped off a portion of the tyre with some masking tape to show the treated and untreated parts off the tyres, for photographic purposes and to enable my judgement of the products being tested.

Poorboys Bold n Bright Tyre Gel

The first product i went for was Poorboy’s latest incarnation of their already popular Bold and Bright, only this was the new Gel formulation which should ease application and hopefully make the product easier to spread evenly and increase durability.

I applied to the front passenger wheel on my partners Vauxhall (i used this as the tyres have a nice big sidewall giving the best appreciation of the products used) the product was applied using a fresh new sponge applicator and seemed to go on easily and evenly.

I personally found it much easier and cleaner to use than the old bold and bright i have used before. I did an initial light coat and then topped a few minutes later with a second heavier coat to try and achieve the best shine/finish from the product.

I then moved to the rear wheel of the car and repeated the test again using a new sponge, this time using the Pinnacle Black Onyx Tyre Gel.

Firstly the smell of this stuff was amazing fruity sweets! the gel itself was slightly thinner than the poorboys product and had a nice dark red colour to it, it also transferred to the tyre very easily in fact the first coat gave alot better shine than the poorboys product, i suspect most of the time one coat would suffice, i did however apply a second coat to keep the test fair.

As you may be able to see from the picture below, the pinnacle gave a much darker shiny finish where the poorboys product gave an very nicely dressed but more satin/matt look.

Once finished i cleaned the half and half tyre down again and used the poorboys product on the front tyres and pinnacle on the rears, the car was left approx half an hour and then driven a few miles to check for the all important “sling” as both claim to be sling free, i am happy to say that there was no significant noticeable sling from the products tested.

Finally a day later the whole car has been washed following my usual regime, but i wanted to see how both products faired as they both claim long lasting durable shine and protection for your tyres.

Result of the Car Tyre Dressing Review

Both myself and Jen concluded that the clear winner of our car tyre dressing review was the Pinnacle Black Onyx Tyre Gel as it produced more shine and seemed to be the slightly more durable of the two products on test. Although the Poorboys Bold and Bright did still manage to provide a clear level of protection and sheen after washing and is definitely worth a look for the more budget orientated buyer.

Good article on tyre dressings; an interesting niche product for tyres.
